Boy Thinker by TWStatonGallery Boy Thinker by TWStatonGallery
This 12"x16" original oil painting from a photo, was done for a friend of mine, as a Christmas gift. It's not for sale, but if ever I find a model as cute as this one, to do more paintings with, I will create some for sale. I just thought everyone would love to see some of my traditional work.

yes, as with the famous "Thinker" statue, this was a lonely or thought provoking expression. I was just glad to have been able to paint what I saw in the photo...

I love this, the color palette is fabulous.

Great art is all about moving the observer in some way, touching their hearts, conveying and inspiring any combination of mood, emotion, story, wonder, beauty/ugliness, message, idea, and thought.

There are 412 human emotions and only 20 facial muscles to express them.

As you know, faces are the ultimate challenge in figure drawing. Drawing a face is not that hard, the challenge is in capturing personality, emotion, attitude, spirit, and story of the character's face.

You have captured this boy's countenance beautifully.

I continually strive to do better with my figures. Faces are my place where I tend to live. I mean I love doing them, and looking for every nuance that I can find to portray.

The palette was a bit intense for me, but it still worked in the end. I would love to do this on a larger canvas and try something different with the colors... Not sure, just feel the urge to work it again... Something I rarely do. I hate repeating my work. :P

But the work is never really repeated. You are not even the same person anymore. You approach the same "subject" from a different place, with different insights and ideas. It would be very unique to anyone who knows art in the least bit.

I know that would seem to be the case, but in the case of doing this subject more than once, I don't feel I could do it justice. Now I have taken the subject of "the last supper" and painted it twice. I approached it in two very different ways, but there you could change so much, to change the look and feel of the painting... whereas this painting is limited to the boy, the ladder, and the wall. It just wouldn't be the same. That is why I say repeating myself just wouldn't work for me.

I see your point. I had not looked at it that way. To be new and interesting, the environment would need to change, like having him sitting on a boulder in a meadow, or on a railing of a porch, etc. But hey, there are so many other things calling out to be painted...

Fascinating... how you made the colors so perfect. So much in sync with the boy's facial expression. I'm truly amazed at this work of art. :)

Thank you so much. The fact that this was taken from a black and white photo, I thought I did a nice job of translating the colors. I was so pleased when my friend, to whom I painted this for, shed a tear over my efforts. He thought I had done a great job. Is nice to do gifts for friends like that. But I never thought I could get emotional responses like that.

Thank you so much for your comment. I hope to post more paintings soon, with the same quality. I have a book cover to do soon, and I'm taking photos of the model this weekend, so I will be busy on that as well.

Thanks for your kind comment. I do try to do many mediums and subjects of art, sometimes it doesn't go like I plan, but I do try. I don't like to be bored. That's why I do variety. I can't evolve as an artist is I continue to stay on just one thing and not venture out to other ideas.

I'm glad you like this one...I have a special spot in my heart for it as well.

Thank you for noticing my varied styles. I know it seems odd that any one person could have done this stuff in one gallery, but I have to be the one to say it's all me. I did it. My goal is to be an accomplished artist. I still have areas that I have not tried to work in, but want to.

There is much to say about stability in style though. I love your work because of that. You are good at what you do, and it shows. Me, I am good at some of the things I do, and better at others. I could be a master painter, but I choose to do other things that deter me from being that great. I do try. This painting of this boy was a fine example of me trying harder than most times. I liked the overall results.

Thank you so much for commenting. I really appreciate that.

Beautiful! I imagine the boy in the picture as a kind of genius who feels separated from society and kids his own age because the adults don't want to accept a child on the same mental level as them, and the children can't relate to him because of his higher thinking nature. That's what it evoked in me as I saw it. Really lovely and realistic!!!

wow, that is way more than what I had in mind when I saw the reference to paint it! You really dug in for that one. Thanks! I was more inclined to think that the boy was longing for something, but couldn't have it. The ladder represented to me, that he was at a place where no one else could be with him. Sorta like another piece I did, but not sure it's here. I painted this with lots of love, for a friend. I think he truly appreciated it to the fullest. Thanks again for the insightful comment!

hi terry,

great work. i love the colouring of the background, the expression on his face, i'm surprised how lively but silent and calming it is. the shadowing is perfect. you could work on his left hand, but the piece in general and its mood is really touching. i'd love to see some more "traditionals" by you.

Thank you so much for your comment. To be able to do paintings like this pleases me. It allows me to explore mood, colors, and things like that. Also I thought the subject was appealing to the eye. The left hand was in a weird position, but from the original, it looked okay. Maybe more time spent on it would have improved it some. :)

I'll try to do more traditional painting soon. I have to come up with something that appeals to me.
