Not everyday this is on a rock by TWStatonGallery Not everyday this is on a rock by TWStatonGallery
This is done of a very special friend of mine. I am enjoying doing these merman series, so much that I think I will offer up some commissions to do versions of people as mermen. Look in my journal soon for that information.

To date, I think this is one of my best mermen digital paintings. I have worked diligently to get the skin tones down, and to work the texture in the tail better. Hopefully that shows through on this and future drawings..

Anyway, I hope you like it!

Here are some critiques which I hope you find useful. I'm not an expert, so these are just opinions that you may choose to listen to or disregard. Lots of nice things going on. The colors are fuzzy, though. I would recommend using a harder brush and then blending rather than using an airbrush. This will give you a more organic feel, especially if it's a textured brush. Experiment with opacity so that you get a more solid form. Does he have an Adam's apple? Also the face seems inconsistent with the rest of the body, though it has tighter rendering. It seems darker. Great expression and very nice anatomy! For the tail, you might want to try having it a bit out of focus or lower detail to emphasize that it is extending back in space. Also try having the colors, as it gets farther away, fade to colors closer to that of the background. The line work stands out a bit, especially with this realistic painting style. Maybe experiment with painting over the lines, or integrating them into the painting better. To portray the wet shinyness of the tail, try to use bright yet saturated highlights that would reflect the surroundings, like the water, the sky, and the rock. Water also tends to bead up instead of streaking. To render water, look at pictures of droplets on flesh as references.

Notice how her colors blend well together, but it doesn't have that fuzzy quality to it.

Your picture also looks inconsistant with the textures. Your use of textures in the picture makes the body of the merman stand out because it is lacking. There is a great set of video tutorials that are on :iconone-vox:'s page. One of those tells you how to apply textures without being too conspicuous. It's a great resource that you might find useful.

There are lots more resources at [link] along with a great amount of amazing digital artists who are eager to help other artists with critiques and anything else. Look at the works of professional digital artists to see how they put a picture together. There are plenty of amazing digital artists on this site to look at.

Wow that was amazingly disorganized. Sorry :p. I brought up a lot of flaws, though I am in no way trying to tear you down. I give this advice in hopes that you might find it useful and somehow take this information and improve with it. If you ever want to return the favor, I would be thankful. :)

.... That was probably the first ever detailed critique that I have EVER gotten here! LOL

You pointed out some very good things. I do want to say that for most of the drawing I used the painting tool, but had it on a very soft edge. Only when I wanted to get a tighter look, did I harden the edge more.

I don't like my line drawing that I start out with, and I do try to incorporate it into the finished art, but this one, I tried to do more to make it blend in with the colors, tho it did not do exactly what I wanted.

Face ratio to the body was a tough thing to do, because I had to work from two separate photos, and of course adjusting them to match was not easy. So yeah, there was a bit of inconsistency.

Ahh... the water. Especially on the skin and the rocks... This has been one of my harder things to deal with. I got to the point where I felt I was putting more time in it than was needed, to make this work for me. But yes, water does bead up, and puddle. Over time I think I will work on different areas where I need to improve, and hopefully the next time it will make a difference to what I do with the elements of my paintings.

One note here is the texture on the fish part of the merman... To be honest, it's the only thing I hate about mermen, because it is repetitive texture, and really zaps me after about an hour of putting it together. I have been wanting to figure out a way to create a texture brush with scales. Not sure if that is possible but May try it.

As with many of my paintings, there is a point to where I say... "this is enough" because if I work on it more, I feel I could ruin it.

Thanks for all the input, and the links to other stuff. I will look at them as time permits. Thank you also for your words. It always helps to have someone give an honest opinion to my work, so I know where I am with regards to my technique.

I shall return the favor. It is what helps us along. :D We need to support one another.

Thanks again.
